I would like you to apply what you have learned about propaganda, ethics, and critical reasoning in this class, to selected real-world issues during the covid pandemic.

Here is the assignment. You will write a short paper (see length requirement above) with the title “Propaganda During the Pandemic.”

Pick some examples of articles, videos, an advertisement, slogan, political speech or commentary, whatever you want to write about, relating to any real-world issues during the pandemic. It can be local, it can be international, or you can do both—doesn’t matter to me.

I’m asking you to find a few examples (at least two, more if you wish) of what you think is good and bad propaganda (i.e., at least one example of propaganda that you think is, overall, justified, and at least one example of propaganda that you think is, overall, not justified) during the time of the pandemic.

Provide the links to these so I can check them when I read your papers.

Some possible topics that have been in the news during the pandemic:

• Racism, police and related topics.

• Many issues relating to coronavirus (there are so many things you could pick here).

• Economic issues relating to capitalism, inequality, poverty, unemployment etc.

• Issues relating to international relations (war in Ukraine, imperialism, US-China conflict, etc.)

• Women’s rights, LGBTQI+ issues, during the pandemic.

Those are some topics that come to mind. You may think of others.

For each example of propaganda you write about, you should:

(i) Clearly describe, in your own words, what is being said or implied in each piece of propaganda you have chosen to discuss.

(ii) Give your reasoning for why you think it is propaganda (you can discuss what kind of propaganda it is, how effective you think it is, what techniques it embodies, etc.)

(iii) Give your reasoning—that is, your arguments—for why you think it is ethically and/or politically justified or unjustified, why you think it is harmful (overall) or beneficial (overall). Here, it’s helpful to at least consider what someone who disagrees with you might reasonably say, and try to counter that. (Remember the importance of the principle of charitable interpretation in critical reasoning.)

(iv) Provide all your sources. You can do this in footnotes, end notes, in text and/or in a bibliography at the end of your paper. It doesn’t matter what referencing style you use, just provide enough information for me to find and check your sources. If it’s not online, provide publisher, date of publication, title, author, and page numbers. There are no limits to number of sources but you just need to provide the full reference so I can check these. Quality of discussion is more important than quantity of sources.

(v) You may of course quote from sources, but keep quotes to a minimum and put things in your own words as much as possible. Of course, do not plagiarize. I am pretty familiar with your writing by now. If I have any questions about your paper, I will want to discuss with you (online) before giving a mark.
