Reviewer #2: To be honest, the methods used here are general and the article lacks novelty. Moreover, the study presents many flaws and does not reach the quality for being published in Journal of Cleaner Production.
Some of the main criticism are followings:
The cadmium treatment of soil lasted only 15 days before water treatment, which is too short a time and will cause a lot of Cd loss. In addition, the removal rate of Cd by plants presented in the article is particularly high, "the Cd removal rate of M. scutella was more than 90% under high Cd stress level (100 mg/kg)". I am very curious about the calculation method of removal rate, but it was not described in the paper. Actually, the period of soil Cd aging was too short to simulating actual contaminated soil, it is supposed that the high removal rate of Cd was due to irrigating. So the experimental design was flawed.
Moreover, as for the calculation of BCF, the description in the paper seems to be wrong and contradictory, e.g., line 109, "The BCF was determined by dividing the Cd concentration in the soil by that in the roots", the definition according to the literature should be the Cd concentration of the plant divided by that of the soil. Furthermore, in line 414, The authors' definition of BCF, however, changed to "Bioconcentration factor (BCF) is another prevalent indicator that reflects the difficulty of heavy metal transport from root to aerial parts of plants to some extent", which is clearly the definition of translocation factors (TF). The BCF results were also very bizarre, being highest at high Cd concentration 100 mg/kg, and the authors did not explain the reason clearly.
Some additional specific weaknesses:
The first appearance of some noun requires full names such as M. scutella in "Abstract".
Full names and abbreviations for Cd should not vary back and forth.
The language of the article needs further improvement, grammatical errors are common, such as the use of the past tense is necessary when describing previous studies.
Line 40, "Soil is also referred to as one of the largest microbial libraries with more than one hundred bacterial species and also more than one million fungi taxa"——only more than one hundred bacterial species?
Line136, the cited literature can not be found in the "References".
