Listening/Speaking/ Reading/Writing ESL Assessment (20%)
In pairs, students will design and create a Speaking/Listening/ Reading/Writing ESL assessment with corresponding instructions, rubric, feedback, and materials. At the end of this assignment, you should have an assessment that you could use in a class. The assignment is not limited to a formal midterm or final exam. Any form of assessment is acceptable as long as it fits within the framework of the selected course.
After selecting a partner, choose a speaking/listening/ Reading/Writing course (any ESL course at your school), for which you will create the assessment. If you'd like me to help you find a partner, email me.
If you have a problem in finding a course, you can ask me to share some sample course outlines.
Design the assessment for your chosen class following the process covered in class, solidly grounding it in the theory.
After creating the assessment, be ready to present it to the class in 5-10 minutes, considering the questions below. I would suggest using PowerPoint and guidelines in the rubric so you can easily walk the class through it. In addition to the presentation, please also hand in the written report with assessment task.
1. How does the assessment achieve content/criterion validity for the course?
2. What is the major task item(s) in the assessment? How is it appropriate for the course objectives?
3. What are the assessment's sections, marking, and scoring?
4. How does the assessment represent authentic production and reception of language?
5. How do you maintain inter/intra-rater reliability for the assessment?
6. Do you consider the assessment practical? Explain your reasoning.
7. What do you expect the face validity of the assessment would be? 8. What opportunities for feedback does the assessment give?
9. How would you adequately prepare students before the assessment?
10. What challenges could you expect to face in its administration?
