In almost every bookshop you can now find guides that aim to help interested readers to survive personal crises as unscathed as possible (e.g. Eberle 2019; Berndt 2013). Dealing with resilience in a psychological context is obviously gaining permanent importance in times of increasing acceleration and processes of social change But resilience has also become well established in scientific discourse in specialist disciplines such as urban and spatial planning over the course of the last few years (see Hahne and Kegler 2017; Kegler 2014; Müller et al. 2011 and others). In contrast, an in-depth discussion on landscape resilience and the impulses for landscape planning that can arise from an examination of resilience is still in its infancy. In addition, it must be stated that resilience is used more as a “cipher for everything that matters in times of crisis like these” (Jakubowski and Kaltenbrunner 2013: I), rather than as a clearly defined field of action. Müller (2011: 1) does not headline the introduction of a textbook with the question “Urban and Regional Resilience - A New Catchword or a Consistent Concept for Research and Practice?” for nothing, pointing both to weaknesses in the theoretical foundation of the term and to a crucial “lack of operationalization” (Müller 2011: 5). According to Dawley (2010: 661), resilience is not infrequently “a ‘buzzword’ with far more market than real added value”. Sometimes it seems to have simply become fashionable to replace sustainability with resilience, but without actually meaning anything different in terms of content. The outlines of the technical term are therefore still far from sufficiently sharp.
