(1) Choice of question. Students are to formulate and email me by 26 OCTOBER at the latest
3 proposed essay questions. These 3 proposals need to be actual questions your essay will
answer, not simply titles, and can be drawn from any topic falling broadly within the
parameters of the course other than your seminar presentation topic. Students are
encouraged to do this after having done some background reading, but well before the 26
October deadline. For ideas, look at the questions included with each topic in this outline.
(2) Authorisation of question. On receipt of your 3 proposals, I will assess them. Depending on
what you've submitted, I may authorise 1, 2, or all 3 of your proposals as they stand; or, more
commonly, I will tweak the most promising of them and send it back to you. What follows is
a process of negotiation that results in a question that both the student and myself are
satisfied with. Once this is achieved, I will send you an email to confirm your question is
authorised.
(3) Student writes the essay.
Once the question has been chosen and authorised, students may then proceed with writing a 4000
word research paper (DUE DATE: 03 DECEMBER). The word count excludes the bibliography.
In terms of format, the essay should be 1.5 lines spaced with 2.5 cm margins, no less than 11 point
font, following the Oxford referencing style (eg footnoted, with a bibliography/reference list at the
end of the essay) and with page numbers. You should also attach a copy of the email authorisation
to the essay. Students should submit the paper through turnitin. If needed, I would be pleased to
meet with you to discuss the argument of your essay – email me for an appointment.
Note: The weight of the essay grade in the general average has been ajusted with regards to the rise
of AI use (ChatGPT and others). This issue will be discussed in class in more details at the
beginning of the semester, but do note that the grading method for essays has been adjusted as
well. As a result, peculiar attention will be given to originality and contributive value of the
argument, and to the quality of the references and of the examples/case studies.
