Aims: 

Throughout the Big Data course, you have been introduced to a variety of problem-solving skills necessary to address the challenges of extracting useful data, information retrieval, 

identifying the organizational needs to employ a SQL (Relational) or NoSQL (Big data) storage etc. This assessment is designed to make you research and enable/prepare yourself for making the critical decision of which storage to use, that is faced by Poultry Production Industry embarking on big data projects. 

Scenario: 

ABC consulting is an agribusiness company that specialises in services related to farm services and Poultry Production, and they aspire to be a leader in the poultry industry. They want to apply data-enabled innovations to commercial chicken production for the improvement and optimisation of broiler chicken business enterprises. The management aims to develop infrastructure for real time data capture and data analytics to generate predictions. These will be used to generate retrospective and preventive insights to enhance 

business capabilities, reduce feed waste, improve chicken survivability and growth, as well as boost product quality. The ABC consulting is going to have first time experience to apply 

new data-enabled innovations to commercial chicken production and looking to improve their understanding & knowledge about Big Data. Write a discussion paper that discusses all bases on which ABC consulting could make this critical decision of choosing between SQL and NoSQL database for their modern data processing infrastructure. 

Note: You must consider all the following points when researching and writing your discussion paper. Use real life related examples / scenarios and completely avoid copying 

and/or re-writing generic/common SQL, NOSQL or Big data definitions/concepts: 

• Dataset types and data characteristics  

• Data processing and storage requirements 

• Organisation readiness and affordability  

• Data quality requirements – consequences/drawbacks of low-quality datasets 

• Knowledge retrieval, analytics/decision support requirements in the related industry 

• Data privacy and security issues 

Format: 

Students will be assessed on their ability to convey the outcomes of their research via a 

report of 2,000 words (excluding references). 

the word count should be 

clearly indicated at the end of the report. Students should submit the report as a Word

processed document. The report should include a bibliography relevant to student research 

and this should be presented in UWE Harvard style. Students will also be assessed on their 

ability to present their recommendations for choosing between SQL and NoSQL data 

storage and on explaining their choices clearly and succinctly.  

Assessment criteria – Discussion paper (report) 

Marks will be awarded according to the extent to which each student demonstrates the 

following (with weightings shown in brackets): 

• Clearly demonstrate an understanding of the issues associated with making a critical 

decision of choosing between SQL and NoSQL data source and the implications of 

choice made and outcomes (60%) 

• Demonstrate an ability to retrieve, evaluate and synthesise information from a range of 

sources and present this information in a relevant, yet objective manner (25%) 

• Demonstration of a clear and appropriate writing style in the report including accurate 

spelling, punctuation, and referencing (15%)
