Efficient Resource Allocation Scheme for Periodic Traffic in 5G NR V2X Communications
The Internet of Vehicles (IoV) is an advanced application of the Internet of Things (IoT) in intelligent transportation systems. IoV leverages vehicular communications to facilitate real-time interaction between vehicles, roadside infrastructure, and pedestrians, supporting various applications and use cases. In this context, the Fifth-Generation New Radio Vehicle-to-Everything (5G NR V2X) is a prominent technology that aims to support advanced use cases requiring ultra-high reliability, ultra-low latency, precise positioning, and high throughput. This encompasses applications such as trajectory sharing and coordinated driving, vehicle platooning, extended sensor sharing, and remote driving which may not be achieved by previous communication technologies.
Even though 5G NR V2X is a prominent technology in vehicular networks, solutions based on this technology must deal with resource allocation (RA) problems. In fact, radio frequencies, which are scarce and precious resources, must be efficiently managed to avoid interference and collisions. Besides, vehicular communications impose more challenges to the RA problem due to constant changes in the network topology caused by the high mobility. Therefore, RA in 5G NR V2X is a key aspect to improve its performance and enable diverse applications. Given that certain areas may not be adequately covered by base stations, 5G NR V2X offers two RA modes: a centralized under-coverage mode (mode 1) and a distributed out-of-coverage mode (mode 2). In the first mode, the cellular base station schedules and allocates resources to vehicles. The focus of this thesis lies in the second mode, where vehicles autonomously select their radio resources using the sensing-based semi-persistent scheduling (SPS) algorithm, which involves channel sensing before resource selection.
However, the traditional SPS algorithm in mode 2 RA suffers from several limitations, particularly inefficient spectrum utilization resulting in interference and collision issues. Considering these challenges, this study aims to enhance the traditional SPS algorithm through modification or propose alternative algorithms that outperform it.
To achieve this, the following subtasks are outlined:

Investigation of the State of the Art.

Concept for the new Resource Allocation Approach.
In this work, a new RA approach should be designed to enable vehicles to exchange cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) utilizing Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) Communications in a highway environment. Additionally, the key performance indicators to assess the approach should be defined.
3.
Implementation and Simulation of the System in Diverse Highway Scenarios. The student should simulate the proposed approach across various highway scenarios. The choice of simulation tool should be made by the student based on clearly defined criteria. Additionally, it is essential to define and justify simulation scenarios to ensure comprehensive evaluation.
4.
Evaluation of the New Resource Allocation Method.
Through the simulation model, the new approach will be evaluated and benchmarked against a previously published method in a research paper to indicate the enhancements attained through the implementation of the new approach.
