2.2 Purpose of this Systematic Literature Review  
 
Despite growing academic and industrial focus, the literature on trust within data spaces remains fragmented. Definitions vary across technical, procedural, and legal disciplines, and there is a lack of synthesis regarding how different trust-building mechanisms, from policy languages and architectural components to governance frameworks, interrelate and where their limitations lie. This fragmentation obscures a clear path toward adaptive, context-aware trust management, which is essential for deploying data spaces in dynamic, real-world scenarios.  
To address this gap, this Systematic Literature Review (SLR) seeks to provide a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of trust within federated data ecosystems. It is guided by three primary research questions:  
How is trust defined and conceptualized in this domain?  
What technical and governance mechanisms are proposed to establish and enforce it?  
What are the key limitations, particularly concerning adaptive policy management?  
By mapping the current landscape and identifying critical research challenges, this review aims to consolidate existing knowledge and provide a clear foundation for future work on adaptive, trustworthy data governance. 
 
3. Research Questions (RQs) 
 
This Systematic Literature Review is guided by the following research questions, designed to systematically explore the conceptual, technical, and practical dimensions of trust within federated data ecosystems.  
RQ1: How is trust defined, conceptualised, and categorised in the literature on data spaces and federated data ecosystems?  
This question addresses the foundational need for a clear definition, as emphasized by literature. It seeks to synthesize the various scholarly interpretations of trust, whether as a technical property, a governance outcome, or a risk-mitigation strategy, and identify its key dimensions relevant to data governance.  
RQ2: What technical and governance mechanisms are proposed in the literature to establish, enforce, and maintain trust across the data lifecycle in these ecosystems? 
This operational question directly analyzes the architectures, policy languages, enforcement components , and governance frameworks that form the trust infrastructure. It explicitly links to the idea to frame the review across the data lifecycle.  
RQ3: What are the identified limitations or gaps in current approaches, specifically regarding adaptive, context-aware policy management for dynamic trust?  
This question is forward-looking and gap-focused. It aims to critically evaluate the state-of-the-art to pinpoint where current mechanisms fall short, particularly in handling dynamic contexts, real-time risk adaptation, and evolving regulations.  
 
4. Methodology 
 
This Systematic Literature Review (SLR) follows the established PRISMA 2020 (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines to ensure a transparent, reproducible, and comprehensive search process [7]. The methodology was designed to systematically identify, select, and synthesize relevant scholarly works addressing trust within federated data ecosystems.
