This study aims to investigate the attenuation properties of ionizing radiation in different construction materials using the GATE Monte Carlo simulation platform. Materials such as ordinary concrete, barite concrete, hematite concrete, brick, and granite will be analyzed to evaluate their shielding performance against gamma and X‑ray radiation.
In this research, a radiation source will be modeled and directed toward the selected materials with different thicknesses. The transmitted radiation intensity will be recorded using virtual detectors within the simulation environment. Based on the obtained data, important shielding parameters including the linear attenuation coefficient (μ), mass attenuation coefficient (μ/ρ), half‑value layer (HVL), and tenth‑value layer (TVL) will be calculated.
The results of the simulation will be compared with theoretical values and literature data to determine the effectiveness of each material in radiation shielding. The study is expected to show that high‑density materials such as barite and hematite concrete provide better radiation attenuation compared to conventional construction materials. The findings may contribute to improving radiation protection strategies in medical, industrial, and nuclear facilities where shielding materials are required.
